Labour leader counsel retirees on lifestyles

Chairman, Petroleum Tankers Drivers of NUPENG, Ibadan, Salmon Oladiti, on Tuesday advised potential retirees to cut down on their lifestyles.

Oladiti said this at a pre-May Day lecture in his paper entitled: “Developing Financial Literacy for Stress-Free Retirement,” in Ibadan.

Things he listed they should avoid in order to achieve a stress-free retirement include smoking, alcohol consumption, drinking outside the home, gambling and laziness.

Other negative tendencies include having numerous wives and concubines, eating unhealthy foods and not creating time for leisure.

"Most important of all, don't buy anything that constitutes a liability. A liability is anything that takes money out of your pocket no matter what they are worth in the future. Think in terms of cash flow. What can I invest in today that will give me funds tomorrow?" Oladiti said.

He said, in planning for retirement, there was need for civil servants and private sector workers in the country to have financial literacy. He explained that developing a healthy relationship with money and building a wealth of assets would generate steady income, adding that one of the ways to attain financial literacy was to invest in oneself.

“When you invest in yourself, it means taking on the importance of educating yourself. Education not in the academic or technical sense, there are necessary skills to be developed in life. Our education does not stop at the college only," Oladiti said.

He said the best form of education for potential retirees was financial education with investment in financial Intelligent Quotient (IQ).

Wogu solicits support for SURE-P

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, has solicited the support of stakeholders for the success of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).

The minister made appeal in Abuja on Saturday at a meeting of the Chairmen of the State Coordination and Implementation Committee of the Community Service Scheme (CSS) of the SURE-P.

Wogu said that President Goodluck Jonathan had decided to make youth employment the focal point of the human development activities of his administration, calling for the citizens’ support for the government’s efforts.

``The CSS is an initiative of the Federal Government, which aims at empowering unskilled and unemployed Nigerian youths, women and people living with disabilities.

``It is also to improve the quality of the socio-economic infrastructure, especially in rural communities, while renewing the confidence and trust of Nigerians in the government’s policies and programmes,’’ he said.

Wogu said that there would be familiarisation and verification visits to Abia, Bauchi, Delta, Kwara, Oyo, and Sokoto states to get the people’s feelings about the programme.

He said that these states, whose selection was based on factors such as performance and logistics, would represent each of the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The minister said that the CSS members in the states that made up each zone would be expected to participate in the Town Hall Meeting in each of the states that would be visited.

Earlier, Dr Margret Nwordu, the Project Director of CSS, said that the objective of the meeting was to review the implementation status of the scheme.

The participants at the meeting were expected to brainstorm on practical modalities to tackle perceptible challenges facing the programme and strategise on the way forward.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, chaired by the minister, had all the chairmen of SURE-P from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT in attendance. (NAN)

Edo trains 350 graduates on extension services

The Commissioner for Agriculture in Edo, Mr Abdul Oroh, said that 350 graduates in the state have been trained in agriculture extension services under the Edo State Youth Employment Services (EDOYES).

Oroh, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Benin, that the programme was aimed at creating employment for the youths and boosting food production in the state.

He said the youths were trained in various farm techniques and are expected to train farmers in the state on the techniques.

He explained that the programme was also conceived as a platform for assisting farmers to know the right thing to do and the right time to do so.

The commissioner also disclosed that the State Government had concluded plans to put most of its farm settlements into useful purposes.

He said the plan includes preparation of farmlands, which would be given to youths for cultivation of various crops.

“We believe that this programme will help in taking some youths out of the labour market.

“The youths that will benefit from the scheme will be given incentives such as loans and farm inputs to assist them. They will also be trained on farming systems.

 “We want to be able to put every land that is lying fallow into productive use and also create employment opportunity as well as boost food production in the state,” he said.

Oroh, who has been commissioner in the agriculture ministry since the inception of Mr Adams Oshiomhole’s government, reiterated the government’s resolve to improve the fortunes of agriculture in the state.

“Our cardinal objective is to enhance the capacity of our farmers to produce enough food to guarantee food security in the state.

“It is also intended as contribution to national food security and to attract more investment to the agro sector in the state.

“We are also poised to increase the development of the agricultural value chain, create jobs and increase the state tax net,” he stated.
