A.M. Best Affirms Ratings of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and Its Subsidiaries

A.M. Best has affirmed the financial strength rating of A++ (Superior) and issuer credit ratings of “aa+” of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and its life/health subsidiaries, C.M. Life Insurance Company and MML Bay State Life Insurance Company.

Concurrently, A.M. Best has affirmed the debt ratings of “aa-” on the existing surplus notes of MassMutual and the “aa+” on notes issued under funding agreement-backed securities programs of MassMutual Global Funding, LLC and MassMutual Global Funding II. The outlook for all ratings is stable. The above companies are headquartered in Springfield, MA. (See below for a detailed listing of the debt ratings.)

The rating affirmations for MassMutual are based upon its strong financial results for 2013 with double-digit growth and record sales in key businesses. The ratings also consider the organization’s continued strong capitalization.

Offsetting these positive rating factors, however, is MassMutual’s recorded statutory net income of a loss of $113 million for full year 2013, compared to a gain of $872 million for full year 2012. The significant decrease is due primarily to a number of one-time items including the acquisition of The Retirement Products Group from The Hartford. MassMutual’s 2013 absolute capitalization reached a record level as its total-adjusted capital (TAC) increased to almost $14.5 billion, representing a compound annual growth rate greater than 8% over the past five years. MassMutual’s investment impairment losses have improved significantly, and A.M. Best believes additional near-term impairments will continue to be moderate and statutory earnings will reach normalized levels and expectations.

MassMutual’s ratings continue to recognize its favorable business mix, diversified operating profile and strong position in the domestic life insurance market. MassMutual is one of the leading writers of whole life insurance in the United States and offers a broad portfolio of insurance products and asset management services to individuals across diverse demographics and the corporate marketplace. The enterprise benefits from a sizable participating whole life block, supplemented by term and universal life policies that primarily are sold through a career agency force. As a result, MassMutual possesses a stable liability structure that facilitates long-term financial strength. Additionally, A.M. Best notes that MassMutual possesses some statutory flexibility to maintain its capital position through the management of its policyholder dividend scale and/or by securitizing or reinsuring redundant reserves. Moreover, MassMutual’s statutory balance sheet values its subsidiary holdings very conservatively; the fair market value of its subsidiary holdings is considerably higher than what is recognized for statutory purposes. While MassMutual’s investment management capabilities are strong, A.M. Best remains cautious about its exposure to the real estate market. This exposure is approximately 1.5 times TAC when residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities (excluding agency issued securities), whole commercial mortgage loans, equity real estate holdings and limited partnership equity holdings with underlying assets in real estate are combined. In particular, MassMutual reported approximately $15.3 billion of whole commercial mortgage loans at year-end 2013, and while the commercial mortgage portfolio is well diversified by both property type and geographic location, A.M. Best notes that the sluggish economic recovery suggests the potential for additional impairments. However, over the past few years, A.M. Best acknowledges that the portfolio has exhibited considerable improvement in its loan-to-value and debt service coverage ratios, along with a substantial decline in watch list loans.

Although MassMutual’s TAC has substantially increased in recent years, A.M. Best notes that the company benefits from a U.S. GAAP guideline (effective January 1, 2009), which reclassifies non-controlling interests as part of equity. While this change has resulted in a roughly $2.2 billion increase to the statutory carrying value of MassMutual’s asset management and international operations, A.M. Best recognizes that the higher statutory carrying amount still remains significantly below the estimated fair value of these operations. Also contributing to the increase in MassMutual’s TAC was the issuance of nearly $1.2 billion in surplus notes since 2008, bringing the total outstanding amount to $1.74 billion. A.M. Best views surplus notes as a lower quality of capital than retained earnings or paid-in capital as surplus notes are debt instruments that have the expectation of repayment. Therefore, A.M. Best notes that MassMutual’s quality of capital has declined as a result of the surplus note issuance, which represents about 12% of 2013 TAC as compared to 6% as of year-end 2008. Additionally, A.M. Best believes MassMutual’s overall financial flexibility is somewhat more limited given its increased financial leverage. With a $400 million surplus note issuance in early 2012, MassMutual’s statutory financial leverage is approximately 13.7%, which is still well within the tolerance range for its current rating level.

A.M. Best notes the significant accomplishment of completing the acquisition of The Hartford Retirement Products Group business, which should support continued growth in MassMutual’s retirement business, as well as adding complementary markets and distribution capabilities.

A.M. Best believes upward rating movement is unlikely at this time. Downward rating pressures may occur should MassMutual experience an unfavorable earnings trends, a precipitous decline in its risk-adjusted capitalization or significant deterioration in its investment performance.

A.M. Best Affirms Ratings of Samsung Fire, Marine Insurance Company of Europe

A.M. Best has affirmed the financial strength rating of A (Excellent) and the issuer credit rating of “a” of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Company of Europe, Limited (SFME) (United Kingdom). The outlook for both ratings remains stable.

The ratings of SFME reflect its excellent risk-adjusted capitalisation, which is expected to support its growth plans. In addition, the ratings factor in the strong support SFME receives from its parent, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd (SFM), which provided SFME’s initial capital of GBP 10.6 million in 2011. SFM provides substantial reinsurance protection to SFME on a facultative basis and through participation in surplus share and per risk excess of loss treaties.

SFME reported an exceptional profit before tax of GBP 3.1 million in 2013, driven by a strong technical result. The combined ratio was 47%, reflecting a benign claims environment, a strong reserve release and high net reinsurance commission income. For 2012, which was SFME’s first full year of operation, the company also reported a good profit before tax of GBP 1.1 million, driven by an excellent combined ratio of 82%.

As a small company writing large risks, SFME is highly dependent on reinsurance. Although the risks associated with this are partly mitigated by the good credit quality of its reinsurers, it is an offsetting factor for the ratings.

In 2013, the majority of SFME's business was comprised of the insurance of Samsung group operations in Europe. In addition, SFME insured a small amount of third-party Chinese, Korean and Japanese risks within Europe, and locally sourced business. Portfolio diversification is expected to continue over the coming years, as SFME expands its external business. As a subsidiary of SFM and part of the Samsung group, a South Korean conglomerate, SFME benefits from an excellent business profile within its target market.

Factors that could lead to positive rating actions include enhanced support from SFM. Factors that could lead to negative rating actions include a significant decline in SFME’s risk-adjusted capitalisation, weaker than expected operating performance or deterioration in the support provided by SFM.

Be ambassadors of CPS, PenCom tells retirees

Worried by the inability of some section of the public to differentiate between the old and the new pension schemes, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) has called on retirees who are beneficiaries of the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2004 to be ambassadors of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Acting Director-General, PenCom, Chinelo Anohu-Amazu

The Acting Director-General, PenCom, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, made this call in Lagos while addressing retirees that the modest achievements recorded by the Commission in the last nine years would not have been possible without the support and understanding of all stakeholders, especially the esteemed retirees.

She called on retirees from the new scheme to share the benefits they enjoy over those in the old scheme, stressing that the reports of fraud published often stemmed from the old scheme.

She said: “The modest achievements recorded by the Commission in the last nine years would not have been possible without the support and understanding of all stakeholders, especially our esteemed retirees. I therefore urge you to sustain your support for the CPS and remain as its ambassadors in projecting the laudable successes of the pension reform.”

She noted that the Contributory Pension Scheme has eliminated one of the major challenges associated with the old Defined Benefit, Pay-As-You-Go scheme, in the area of irregular payment of monthly pension benefits, stressing that it is indeed gratifying that as opposed to uncertainties encountered in receiving monthly pensions, today these benefits are remitted seamlessly on due dates to individual retirees’ bank accounts without any unnecessary hassles.

She said the Commission remains committed to institute further measures aimed at improving the retirement benefit administration processes to enhance the comfort of the senior citizens who have given much to the collective progress of the nation.

Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers preaches early planning for retirement

Nigeria’s biggest pension fund administrator, Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited, with assets under management of over N941 billion, has taken its drive for retirement planning to Abuja, the Nigerian capital, with a call to Nigerians to understand the importance of early retirement planning.

Managing Director, Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited, Dr. Demola Sogunle

Unveiling the second phase of its interactive pre-retirement seminar in Abuja on Thursday, the company said it believes that raising awareness of retirement would help companies and their employees in particular to better understand the imperative of retirement planning.

Chief Executive Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited, Dr. Demola Sogunle, speaking at the seminar, which had the theme, ‘Life renewed at 55 and beyond,’ said the pension system, with defined contributions as its foundation, presents a clear path for employees to maintain a stable standard lifestyle even well after retirement.

He said: “People are apprehensive about retirement because they do not plan for it early enough. Ideally, planning for retirement should commence from the day one takes on a first job.  It demands setting aside part of current income into a retirement savings account. Our central mission at Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers Limited is to help Nigerians address their retirement needs.”

The seminar also provided a platform for the firm to forge closer ties with its customers and to enlighten the public on developments in the pension industry. Other activities that featured at the event were presentations on Lifestyle and Health and Managing Finances, delivered by Dr. Chito Nwana, Medical Director, Tabitha Medical Center, Abuja and Emmanuel Olumuyiwa Olu-Ayeni, President /CEO StarBright Consulting Limited, respectively.

“In addition to creating awareness about the necessity of having a retirement plan and enjoying a comfortable life post-retirement, another objective of this campaign is to further deepen the relationship with our customers by reminding them of our availability at anytime and anywhere to attend to their needs. In so doing, we obtain significant feedback with which to develop solutions that address their specific needs. This will not only put them at ease; we are also motivated to go the extra mile to deliver on our promises,” Sogunle stated.

He emphasized that planning for retirement should commence early in an individual’s working life as it typically takes many years to accumulate the necessary funds with which to live comfortably when the salary eventually ceases to arrive at the end of every month.

“This seminar, besides celebrating all of you that will soon transit from contributors to retired clients of Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers, will also provide an opportunity to address the concerns or anxieties you might have as retirement draws close,” he added.

Other issues that were examined include preparation for retirement; accessing retirement benefits; health at retirement and investment opportunities post-retirement.

Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers, stated Dr Sogunle, is backed by the requisite expertise and experience and strong financial clout of the Standard Bank Group, ensuring efficiency in the management and safety of clients’ investments.

“We believe that the support, experience and capabilities of the Standard Bank Group, to which Stanbic IBTC belongs, have been instrumental in enhancing our expertise, resource base and general service delivery; thus reinforcing our goal of providing excellent service to all our customers,” he said.

At the end of the seminar, Sogunle outlined three crucial considerations which everyone must give a thought to for a secured future. The first being that no one will ever care about your retirement investments as much as you do – so educate yourself. The second thought is that when making retirement investments, seek professional assistance – even the best athletes have coaches. The third thought is even if you may have stopped working for money; your money should never stop working hard for you.

In addition to entertaining the guests, Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers also provided free health checks which included screening for hypertension and diabetes, comprehensive dental and eye screening with consultation as well as lifestyle assessment for all the participants.

Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers is a subsidiary of Stanbic IBTC Holdings, a member of Standard Bank Group, a full service financial services group with a clear focus on three main business pillars - Corporate and Investment Banking, Personal and Business Banking and Wealth Management. Standard Bank Group is the largest African bank by assets and earnings.
